Farmer Gabriel Estevão Reis Cigar UFO incident

In the early 1980s, deep in rural Brazil, a quiet farming community became the center of one of the country’s most disturbing and little-known UFO cases. What began as a strange sighting quickly escalated into something far more unsettling—one that left people sick, one man dead, and an entire town searching for answers.

Farmer Gabriel Estevão Reis was working in his banana fields near Morrinhos, Goiás, when he heard a strange noise overhead. At first, it sounded like a jet aircraft—but something wasn’t right. Looking up, he saw a massive object, “like a monstrous cigar,” tearing across the sky at incredible speed. It appeared to be controlled, yet unstable—moving with purpose, but without any sign of slowing down. Then, without warning, it plunged directly into a reservoir on his property.

The impact was violent. Water was thrown more than 100 meters into the air, and the ground shook so hard that Reis said his house trembled. The small reservoir—roughly 35 by 25 meters—began to boil for several minutes, killing every fish inside and raising the water level dramatically. Whatever had fallen from the sky didn’t just crash—it disappeared beneath the surface.

Curiosity quickly turned into concern. Reis’ 19-year-old son, Wagdo, entered the water shortly after the crash, attempting to locate the object. At first, nothing seemed wrong—but within days, his condition began to deteriorate. He developed nausea, severe irritability, pain in his legs, and unusual bruising across his body. Within weeks, Wagdo was diagnosed with leukemia, and not long after, he died.

He wasn’t the only one affected. Several others who came into contact with the reservoir reported similar symptoms, though not all were physical. Three men who later attempted to drain the reservoir and recover the object described insomnia, anxiety, agitation, vomiting, fatigue, and intense psychological distress. One of them said that everything suddenly disappeared in front of him, as if reality itself had collapsed. He felt like he was shrinking, becoming smaller and smaller, until nothing made sense anymore. Others spoke of paranoia, confusion, and an inability to function normally, fearing they were “condemned.”

Determined to uncover the truth, locals attempted to drain the reservoir. After hours of work, they uncovered a large crater beneath the mud. Using long poles, they probed deeper and felt something solid—smooth, massive, and buried far below. But they couldn’t reach it. Without proper equipment, the effort was abandoned, and the reservoir was allowed to refill, swallowing whatever lay beneath once again.

News of the incident spread quickly. Residents reported hearing the same deafening noise on the day of the crash, some describing it as similar to a sonic boom. Others visited the site and saw dead fish, disturbed ground, and a community gripped by fear. Rumors of contamination began to circulate. Some believed the object was extraterrestrial. Others suspected a secret experiment gone wrong. No official explanation satisfied the locals.

A Brazilian Air Force intelligence document later acknowledged reports of an unidentified flying object crashing in the area, along with allegations linking the event to a death and suspicions of possible radiological contamination. Despite this, no definitive conclusion was ever made public. There was no confirmed recovery, no clear explanation, and no real closure.

In the absence of answers, theories filled the void. Some believed the object was a controlled craft that deliberately chose the reservoir to avoid greater damage. Others suggested it may have been part of a larger craft or some kind of unknown technology. One local lawyer, who also claimed to have fallen ill after visiting the site, speculated that the object could still be operational—perhaps even capable of leaving at any moment.

It never did.

The Morrinhos incident remains one of Brazil’s strangest and most unsettling cases. A violent crash, unexplained illness, and a death that may—or may not—be connected. Decades later, the same questions remain. What fell into that reservoir? Why did it make people sick? And why was it never fully investigated? Whatever lies beneath that water is still there.
